Guide to Building and Using Credit Wisely

Step 4: Setting Yourself Up for Credit Success

Getting approved for a credit card is the first win. The next step is to set yourself up to use it in a way that builds a positive credit history and supports your financial goals.

Activate Your Card Promptly

Once your card arrives, follow the activation instructions right away. This ensures it is ready to use and protected from unauthorized access.

Enroll in Online and Mobile Access

Set up online banking and the BrightBridge mobile app so you can:

  • View transactions in real time
  • Monitor your available credit and balance
  • Receive alerts for upcoming payments or unusual activity
BrightBridge Tip
You can set custom alerts through our mobile app to notify you when you reach a certain spending threshold. This helps you stay on budget and protect your credit utilization rate.
Set Up Autopay or Payment Reminders

One of the most valuable features of your online and mobile banking is the ability to set up automatic payments. Paying on time is the single biggest factor in building strong credit, and autopay helps you stay consistent. Start by scheduling at least the minimum payment each month, or set calendar reminders to ensure nothing slips through the cracks. Over time, aim to pay your full statement balance each month to avoid interest charges and keep your credit in top shape.

Start with Small, Manageable Purchases

Use your card for regular expenses you would pay for anyway, such as groceries or gas. This helps you establish a payment history without overspending.

Keep Your Credit Utilization Low

Aim to use less than 30 percent of your available limit at any given time. For example, if your limit is $1,000, try to keep your balance below $300.
